Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a two vehicle crash on Highway 97 just north of the Bend city limits that took the life of a 19-year old Madras, Oregon man.

On December 30, 2010 at approximately 12:23 p.m. a red 2000 Mercury Cougar 2 door sedan driven by DEREK LYBBERT-ARIZMENDEZ, age 19, from Madras, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 133. As the Mercury Cougar traveled southbound it drove onto a snow covered median separating both lanes of the highway. The car crossed the median into the oncoming lanes and struck a white 1996 GMC Suburban operated by JOHN SIEMENS, age 53, from Bend. Both vehicles collided head-on and came to a rest blocking the north and southbound lanes of the highway.

SIEMENS sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Charles Medical Center where he was treated and later released.

LYBBERT-ARIZMENDEZ died at the scene of the crash. Two passengers in the Mercury Cougar identified as Angelica Mendoza, age 19, and Javion Pineda, age 2 months, both of Madras, both received minor injuries and were transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.

All of those involved in the crash were using safety restraints.

Southbound traffic was blocked while police and emergency crews investigated the crash and cleared the scene. Northbound traffic was diverted around the scene, but was still limited due to heavy congestion. Both lanes of Highway 97 were re-opened approximately three hours after the initial crash at 3:30 p.m.

OSP troopers are continuing the investigation into the crash. ODOT, Bend Police Department, Bend Fire Department and the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.
