  • Fireworks Safety
As the 4th of July draws near, many Oregonians choose to safely celebrate our independence by attending a professional fireworks display. To those who choose to use retail consumer fireworks, State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace reminds you to only use legal fireworks and know how to use them safely. Every year in Oregon, celebrations turn to tragedy due to fireworks injuries or fires. In 2012, there were 161 fireworks-caused fires, and 36 reported fireworks-caused injuries. Most of the injuries were from using illegal mortars and legal sparklers. Over the past five years, fireworks-caused fires were responsible for more than $3.5 million in property loss. If you choose to use Oregon legal fireworks, the best way to protect your family and property is to “Keep it Legal and Keep it Safe!”

  • Wildfire Awareness

More people are living in what is known as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), where homes and other structures are built in or near woodland settings or forests. There, residents enjoy the beauty of the environment but face the very real danger of wildfire.

Are you prepared in the event a wildfire starts?

  • Grilling outdoors? Follow our safety steps.

As the weather warms up, cooking outdoors is a nice way to spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, over the past five years there have been 203 outdoor grill-related fires in Oregon, resulting in nine injuries and more than $4 million in property loss. Avoid having your barbeque parties and cookouts becoming tragic by following our outdoor grilling safety tips.
