Mahoney
Safe
& Healthy Schools Coordinator at the Oregon Department of Education.
Michael
is the data owner of the annual discipline incidents collection throughout
the State of Oregon. His roles and responsibilities with the department further
include providing consultation, guidance and assistance for bullying
prevention, best practices for the use of physical restraint and seclusion,
substance abuse prevention, and the promotion of positive school climates and
healthy learning environments for all students. Michael also assists with
the monitoring of special education compliance in the State of Oregon. He
conducts research and analysis, and provides guidance regarding ‘disproportionality’
in reference to the use of exclusionary discipline (suspensions and
expulsions) with students with special needs and with students from different
races and ethnic backgrounds.
Michael
has been with the Oregon Department of Education for one year at present. He
currently holds licenses as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, a
licensed School Psychologist in Oregon, and as an Educational Administrator.
He comes with twenty-four years’ experience in public education, including
working as a School Psychologist and as a Special Education Coordinator for
public school districts, including working in Oregon the past fourteen years.
