Physical Abilities Testing
What is the PAT?
To be considered for employment as an OYA Group Life Coordinator, applicants are required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical abilities test.  The following dates and locations are scheduled for candidates to participate in this activity.  Successful demonstration of the physical abilities outlined below and on the recruiting announcement will be required before candidates are referred for interviews.

To make an appointment, contact the area convenient to you (see schedule below).   If you reach voice mail, please leave the date and time you want to test, your full name (please spell your last name), and your telephone number.  Please plan to arrive a few minutes before the scheduled test time - we start promptly at the times indicated!  If you are late, you may be rescheduled to another date.

Because this is also part of the pre-employment process, there will be no compensation nor expenses paid for participation in the test.

Upon successful completion of the physical abilities test, you will receive confirmation of completion and your name will be coded on the list of eligible candidates as being qualified for further consideration.  If you are unable to successfully complete the physical abilities test, you may be retested after 30 days.

Please note the physical abilities test results are good for only one year.  If your test date exceeds one year, you must retest.

Required Physical Abilities
Candidates must be able to demonstrate they meet the following physical standards:
  • ability to climb a flight of stairs;
  • ability to run 100 yards, then jog 100 yards, and then exercise equivalent to using physical restraining force for 2 to 3 minutes;
  • ability to kneel, bend, turn and stand, turn and sit, reach and crawl;
  • ability to move (not carry) objects weighing from 10 to 162 pounds, up to 54 feet;
  • ability to handle, feel, and have finger dexterity;
  • acceptable vision of at least 20/30 (with or without correction) in both eyes, with peripheral vision of 160 degrees; and
  • have binaural hearing (aided or unaided) in ranges from 500 to 2000 Hz and from 20 to 60 db.

IMPACT Testing
What is the IMPACT Test?
The IMPACT test is a pre-employment assessment tool that is required for individuals seeking employment with the Oregon Youth Authority in the following classifications:

  • Group Life Coordinators
  • Psychiatric Social Workers (QMHP)
  • Juvenile Parole and Probation Officers
  • Juvenile Parole and Probation Assistants
  • Institutional Registered Nurses
  • Cooks

About the IMPACT Test
IMPACT is a video-based, multiple-choice, pre-employment testing system designed specifically for individuals who interact directly with youth offenders. It is used to measure a person’s common sense.    The test includes a brief multiple-choice reading exercise.

The IMPACT test is not a pass/fail test.  This pre-assessment test is used along with other tools (e.g., job interview, physical abilities test, drug screening, reference checks, and criminal history checks) to assist in the selection of employees best matched to the needs of the agency.  It must be completed prior to a job offer being made by OYA.

The IMPACT testing process is administered by OYA Employee Services in a very closely structured environment and timeline.  It takes approximately two (2) hours to complete.  Applicants are provided available dates, times, locations, and other testing information upon receipt and acceptance of their job applications for one of the above classifications.

Because this is part of the pre-employment process, there will be no compensation nor expenses paid for participation in the test.

Upon successful completion of the IMPACT test, your name will be coded on the list of candidates eligible for further consideration.  IMPACT test results are kept on file for three (3) years.  If you are unable to complete the IMPACT test or would like to retake the test, you may register for another appointment.  Both results are kept on file for three (3) years but only the most current results are used in the hiring process.
