Commissioner Smith Comment On U S WEST/Qwest Merger

Salem, Ore. – Commissioner Joan Smith issued the following statement regarding the proposed merger of U S WEST Communications, Inc. and Qwest Communications International Inc.:
"Business decisions like the U S WEST/Qwest merger are beyond the jurisdiction of the OPUC.
This match-up makes more sense for Oregon and customers than the Global Crossing proposal did. I believe a new service culture and Qwest interest in broadband mean good things for Oregon’s telecommunications future."
