Transportation Impacts
Overview
Vehicles on the highway
The federal Recovery Act provided Oregon with more than $340 million to preserve and improve the state's highways, transit systems, rail, bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure and more. Funding has been provided to the state, local governments, and transit districts under a variety of programs. A few examples of transportation funding opportunities include:
  • $270 million in highway funding for highways, roads, bridges, public transit, rail and port projects.
  • $14.6 million for public transit funding across the state.
  • More than $10.5 million competitively awarded funding for high speed rail projects.

Projects
Ferry Boat - Recovery Act funds of $3.2 million purchased a new ferry boat, improved the existing ferry landings and upgraded terminal electrical utilities from diesel-powered generators to overhead transmission lines. These enhancements provided more reliable and expanded passenger and vehicle ferry service over the Willamette River near Independence, Oregon.

Transit Program - ODOT’s Public Transit Division (PTD) administered $14.6 million Recovery Act funds under the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5311 funded Non Urbanized Area program.  In addition, FTA is providing significant transit funding directly to Oregon’s large metropolitan areas.  Transit facility improvements provided more convenient access to transit patrons as well as increasing safety in transit utilization.

Transportation ProgramTransportation funding from the Recovery Act continues to improve Oregon’s highways throughout the state, strengthening communities and providing long-term economic development opportunities.  Oregon’s share of the national highway funding formula was more than $270 million.
