A message from State Treasurer Wheeler

Right now, as you read this, somebody is dreaming up a scheme that could cost you money.

Every day, across our great state, innocent people and families are falling into financial traps. I don’t want you to be one of them.

As Oregon State Treasurer and the state’s financial leader, I am committed to helping protect Oregon families. You need your money, every dollar of it. So you need to know how to protect your wallet, your bank account and your vital private information.

You also need to know how to take action.

Many financial traps are hard to spot. In fact, in many cases, they are perfectly legal – but they still could cost you money at a time when you need it most. Remember, just because something is legal, it doesn’t mean it is fair or that somebody isn’t trying to take advantage of you.

These traps come in all shapes and sizes. They could be email offers promising prizes or work-at-home jobs, or phony claims for government assistance, or letters promising to help you reduce your property taxes. You will spend money unnecessarily if you pay for a copy of your credit reports. You also could lose money if you pay somebody to search for your Oregon unclaimed property because that’s a free service and you can do it yourself.

This website is intended to help you better guard your money by providing information on how to spot scams, financial fraud and other traps, and investigate and report scams to protect your family and others from getting burned. Looking out for each other is part of the Oregon way.

GuardYourMoney.org, which was created by the Office of the State Treasurer, is also a clearinghouse that will connect you to the Scam Alerts that are produced by the Attorney General’s Office, the top consumer complaints from last year, and information that is assembled by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about how to protect your money and your financial security. In the end, Oregon will be a better place for all of us.

Ted Wheeler
