FIRE SITUATION UPDATE: Plans made to withdraw National Guard Soldiers from Quartz Fire
Salem, Ore.- Plans are currently underway to demobilize National Guard soldiers from the 41st Separate Infantry Brigade from the Quartz Fire. Officials have determined this fire to be at least 75 percent contained and existing resources are now able to control this blaze.

If current conditions continue, soldiers currently based at Cantrell Buckley State Park near Ruch, Ore. will return to their home stations on Thursday morning, August 24, 2001, departing at approximately 10:00 a.m. for demobilization processing.
These men and women are from 2nd Battalion, 162 Infantry headquartered in Cottage Grove with units in Newport, Eugene, Corvallis and Coos Bay; the 1st Battalion, 162nd Infantry, headquartered in Forest Grove with units in Hillsboro, McMinnville, Gresham, St. Helens and Salem; 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry, headquartered in Ashland with units in Medford, Roseburg, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls; and the 2nd Battalion, 218th Field Artillery, headquartered in Portland, with units in Hood River, Clackamas and Portland. In all 18 crews of 20 men each and their support elements will come off of state active duty orders.
Also, aviation assets from Det., 1, Company E, 168th Aviation from Pendleton consisting of three CH-47 Chinook Helicopters with 2,000 gallon buckets and crews have been withdrawn from the Monument Complex Fire as of 9 a.m. this morning. The Firehawk, a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter with the 1,000 gallon belly tank and nozzle system from the 1042nd Medical Company (Air Ambulance) of Salem has also been withdrawn from the fire effort in Monument.
