Oregon Citizen Soldiers to recieve awards for duty in Iraq
Several citizen soldiers who served in the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry will recieve medals July 9 for their service in Iraq. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. inside the Gymnasium, Building 5 at Lane Community College in Eugene.
The soldiers receiving the awards are those who volunteered from other units to join the 2nd Bn., 162nd Inf. during the Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment that ended in March. These soldiers will return to their original units throughout Oregon.
Those soldiers originally from the 2nd Bn., 162nd Inf. who received awards will be recognized in a ceremony in September when the unit changes command.
The medals and awards presented tomorrow include:
- Bronze Star Medals for meritorious service
- Purple Heart Medals
- Meritorious Service Medals
- Army Commendation Medals with Valor devices
In addition, two members of the unit's family support group will be recognized for their efforts while the battalion was deployed.
