Camp Rilea to host Oregon Army National Guard competition
WARRENTON, Ore. – Preparations are under way at Camp Rilea, to host the Oregon Army National Guard's "Best Warrior Challenge," May 21 -23.

The competition is a first-year initiative to showcase Oregon National Guard members as they compete in various events in one consolidated location.

The goal of the competition is to have as many events as possible in one location to make it easier for commanders and senior non-commissioned officers to observe their troops and to celebrate their successes.

"We are very excited to bring our best warriors from across the state to compete for a chance to advance to the regional and national level," said Oregon National Guard, State Command Sgt. Maj. Brunk Conley. "We look forward to getting into the competition this weekend."

The first event will be the Best Warrior Challenge, where Oregon Army National Guard members from around across the state can compete to see who is ranked Oregon's best soldier and non-commissioned officer of the year. Winners of this competition will advance to a regional competition later this year.

The Adjutant General's Match (TAG Match) will be the second event, where Oregon Army and Air National Guard members will compete in a shooting competition. Winners of this event will also proceed to a regional competition.

The challenge also features a State Combatives competition, where soldiers compete using Army hand-to-hand combat techniques and mixed martial arts fighting practices.

The Oregon Army National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program will also participate in a Squad Challenge event. Recruits competing in that event will participate in a physical fitness test, a road march and squad tactics.

The event will kick off the afternoon of May 21, and will run from early morning to late at night during the weekend. An awards dinner is scheduled Sunday afternoon.
