The purpose of this course is to help students develop skills that will enable them to gain employment in the medical/optical field upon their release. The course will emphasize skills relating to the Lions in Sight Eyeglass Recycling Program. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of competency from Portland Community College.

Description of Program:
Students will learn the fundamentals of Basic Medical Terminology as it relates to the eye, Optical Concepts and Anatomy, Basic Business Communication skills including interpersonal communication, customer service and business writing.

Graduates of this program can demonstrate competencies in all aspects of:
  • Break down medical terms into there basic word parts.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of business communication.
  • Identify the parts of the eye and its functions.
  • Write in clear, concise, and correct language appropriate for the profession.
  • Plan, organize, write and revise business documents such as memos, business letters, reports, and medical histories.
  • Define and exhibit basic understanding of optical terms such as strabismus, myopia, hyperopia, and others.
  • Explain how vision occurs.
  • Fit, repair, and properly clean eyeglasses.
  • Understand how to effectively communicate with a wide range of people.
