REMARKS AS PREPARED
December 21, 2017
The families here today are struggling to make ends meet and trying to live normal lives in difficult circumstances.
Multnomah County and facilities like Human Solutions are doing incredible work to house Oregonians from across the state.
I have met with Chair Kafoury, Mayor Wheeler, and Speaker Kotek on this issue.
It’s critical to support these families, and it is our job to make sure we are doing all we can to provide that support.
Our first goal is to get families off the streets during challenging weather.
Especially given the difficulties of the upcoming winter months, we have aligned the state, county, and city to ensure that everyone has a warm place to go this winter.
Unfortunately, those resources are being stretched thin. That’s why I am requesting up to $5 million in the upcoming legislative session.
That $5 million is key to make sure we have the resources we need to provide sustainable and high-quality shelters for families experiencing homelessness.
We also want to create housing opportunities that help shelters serve as a place people go through instead of to.
