Oregon State University Alumni Dinner
September 17, 2015
Thank you President Ray. Thank you everyone for the opportunity to offer a few words of welcome this evening.
Oregon State University has a long-established reputation for excellence demonstrated by the achievements of its students, faculty and alumni throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. And the University also has a huge and positive impact beyond its Corvallis campus, in communities all over Oregon. In this region alone, there’s:
• The OSU Extension Service,
• The Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center here in Pendleton,
• The Hermiston Agriculture Research Center down the road a bit, and
• Active partnerships with Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon University.
The 2015 legislative session was fruitful for higher education and Oregon State University, with increased investments in specific programs like the Extension, the Experiment Station, and the Forest Research Laboratory. We also took meaningful action to make a college degree more affordable for Oregon students, increasing the Oregon Opportunity Grant to serve an additional 16,000 students.
As we enter the 2016 legislative session I am hopeful we will be able to continue to invest in higher education so that more Oregonians have access to OSU and Oregon’s other public colleges and universities. I am also committed to working to improve the number of students who complete their degree program in four years. This is an important part of affordability.
With Ed Ray at the reins, there is no doubt that Oregon State University will continue to attract bright and talented Oregonians, and help them achieve their educational and career goals.
Thank you - Go Beavs!
