Governor Kate Brown
June 16, 2018

Good afternoon. I’m Governor Kate Brown, and it is my honor to be here at Kingsley Field.

Thank you General Stencel.

Today, I’m proud to sign into law a bill that deepens Oregon’s commitment to our National Guard service members.

As Commander of Oregon’s National Guard, I’m incredibly grateful for the men and women who answer the call to serve, and I am inspired by your bravery.

Whether you’re fighting on the frontlines, fighting wildfires, or helping prepare our state for the influx of eclipse viewers -- our Oregon Guard members are always ready to answer the call to help Oregonians in times of need.

Through the military, you have opportunities to learn specialized skills and gain experiences that set you apart from most others. This is why employers seek out members of Oregon’s National Guard.

In or out of uniform, higher education will open even more doors of opportunity as you continue on your career path.

Extending tuition assistance to Guard members is one important way to show our appreciation for your service by investing in your education and future.

I want to thank Representative McLane for introducing HB 4035 this past session. I also appreciate Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission for their support.

Along with each of Oregon’s seven public universities and the network of local community colleges, we are committed to ensuring our guards members can easily access this new benefit to support your pursuit of advanced degrees.

Thank you, and I’m now thrilled to sign HB 4035.
