REMARKS AS PREPARED
Governor Kate Brown
Mobilization Ceremony - St. Helens
October 13, 2019
Soldiers of Bravo Company 741, I’m pleased to be here today. To share this moment with each and every one of you. To honor the work you’re about to do for your country.
As I look around the room today, I see the proud faces of your family members and loved ones. This is a room truly filled with love, support, and strength.
Soldiers, please know that we honor and appreciate your service. I recognize that keeping the balance between being both a citizen and Soldier can be difficult, and the complications that come with that responsibility.
Your willingness and commitment to take on this additional duty for Oregonians and our country is admirable. As General Stonewall Jackson said, “The patriot volunteer, fighting for country and his rights, makes the most reliable soldier on earth.”
And families, your support is critical. The help and encouragement you give these soldiers is essential to their success overseas.
Military families truly reflect the meaning of selfless service. You lean on one another in times of need, and rally together for support.
It was philosopher G. K. Chesterton who said, “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”
I am so proud to witness your send-off today. I know you will successfully complete your final training at Fort Bliss, your next stop before heading over to the United Arab Emirates.
You are truly Oregon’s best and an inspiration. I wish you well. Thank you for your continued service.
