For Governor Brown, the safety of Oregonians in their homes, neighborhoods, places of work, and communities is paramount.
The use of data to inform our decisions in public safety is a key to our future success, and is informing Oregon’s approach to criminal justice reform. Our state is a national leader in innovations, but we are striving to do better—through effective criminal and juvenile justice policy, initiatives to keep our communities safer, and constantly improving ourselves in pursuit of a fair and equitable justice system.
The Governor’s Public Safety and Military Policy Advisor provides analysis and advice to the Governor. The advisor works with several agencies that provide core safety services to the state, as well as agencies and commissions that work on implementing the Governor’s public safety and military agendas. Policy implementation is achieved through agency budgets, legislative advocacy, executive orders, and agency rules and practices.
The Public Safety and Military Advisor is counted on to assist in state responses when there are public safety emergencies, ensuring that appropriate state resources are available and deployed when needed. During wildfire season, the advisor works closely with the Oregon State Fire Marshal, Oregon Department of Forestry, Oregon National Guard, as well as the Oregon State Police to assist in emergency declarations.
