Maintain Registration

A Registered Landscape Architect on inactive or inactive emeritus status can request a return to active practice status by submitting:

  • a written request asking to return to active status;
  • the current year’s renewal fee; and
  • continuing education documentation as required in OAR 804-025-0015 (as will be verified by an audit)

NOTE: A Registered Landscape Architect registrant on inactive or inactive emeritus status is not authorized to practice landscape architecture in Oregon. A registrant on inactive status may not use the Registered Landscape Architect title or any similar title in Oregon. A registrant on inactive emeritus status may use the title Registered Landscape Architect, emeritus or any similar title indicating the emeritus or retired status in Oregon.

Each Landscape Architect-in-Training (LAIT) and Registered Landscape Architect has an annual renewal date set by the Board. A registration expires the next calendar day after the annual renewal date if registration is not timely renewed. Registration date is set as the last calendar day of the month of the registrant's initial date of registration. For example, if the Board granted registration on May 16, then the renewal date is set as May 31. In this example, the registration expiration date is June 1.

The renewal window opens 45 days before an annual renewal date. The Board sends courtesy renewal notices using contact information on record. Even in the event that a registrant does not receive a renewal notice, the registrant is responsible for timely annual renewal of registration.

Renewal of registration can be completed online, including secure payment by credit card. No paperwork must be returned to the Board office if using online renewal.

For renewal not completed online, the Registered Landscape Architect must submit the signed renewal notice and appropriate fee to the Board office.

A registration is considered delinquent (lapsed) if renewal is not completed (inlcuding payment of fees) on or before the renewal date.

Each Landscape Architect-in-Training (LAIT) and Registered Landscape Architect is required to verify, and update as needed, contact information at the time of annual renewal. Outside of the renewal process, each LAIT and Registered Landscape Architect must also notify the Board within 30-days of any change in contact information. Registrants with active registration can update contact information using the online renewal system at any time of year. Alternatively, registrants can send written notification by letter or email to the Board office.

A registration is delinquent (lapsed) if the Landscape Architect-in-Training or Registered Landscape Architect did not complete the requirements for renewal by, or before, the annual renewal date. Complete means the Board has received the renewal, including fees due.

If a registrant fails to renew a registration by the renewal date but completes the renewal requirements within sixty (60) days of the renewal date, the following apply:

  • No late fee is required if the renewal is completed not later than 1 month (30 days) after the renewal date; or
  • A late fee is required if the renewal is completed more than 1 month (30 days) but not later than 2 months (60 days) after the renewal date.

Reinstatement is required if the renewal is completed more than 2 months (60 days) after the renewal date but within five (5) years of the last renewal due date (i.e., the reinstatement period). Individuals seeking renewal of registration within the reinstatement period must complete the requirements for renewal and submit the following:

  • a written request for reinstatement to the Board explaining why the registration was not timely renewed;
  • continuing education documentation as required in OAR 804-025-0015 (as will be verified by audit, except for LAITs); and
  • all fees required by the Board, including back renewal fees and late fees for each year registration was lapsed.

NOTE: A Registered Landscape Architect with delinquent (lapsed) registration is not authorized to practice landscape architecture in Oregon.

IMPORTANT - Expiration of registration

After five (5) consecutive years of non-renewal, inactive status, or inactive emeritus status, a registration is considered expired and can no longer be reinstated or reactivated to active status. If you are past the five (5) year deadline, you must apply for registration as a new applicant and meet current registration requirements for education, exam, and experience. Per law, the Board cannot grant any exceptions to this 5-year limit.
