Salem, OR—Today, Governor Tina Kotek announced that the State of Oregon will award Fallen Nyssa Police Department Reserve Corporal Joseph Johnson, 43, with the Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice. Oregon State Police Superintendent Casey Codding will present the award on the Governor’s behalf to Corporal Johnson’s family during his Memorial to be held on April 22, 2023.

“I am honored to award Corporal Johnson with the Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice – a title befitting to this tragedy. My thoughts are with his family and the public safety community as they cope with this terrible loss,” Governor Kotek stated.

Governor Kotek issued a statement and statewide flag lowering order on April 16 in recognition of Corporal Johnson’s passing and in honor of his service to his state. Corporal Johnson was also an Oregon Department of Corrections employee, assigned to Snake River Correctional Institution. Corporal Johnson is survived by his wife and two children. The Fallen Badge Foundation is accepting donations on behalf of the family. More information about the incident will be found here.
