Salem, OR—Governor Kate Brown today announced the appointment of Sophorn Cheang as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director for the Governor's Office, effective August 20.

"It is important that state government reflect the diversity of Oregon communities," Governor Kate Brown said. "I look forward to welcoming Sophorn, whose experience and expertise will ensure state services are responsive to the needs of all Oregonians, and that state government is an inclusive and welcoming workplace for all employees."

Currently, Sophorn serves as Director for the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization Asian Family Center and Senior Manager for the Community Development Department. Sophorn brings experience in promoting wellness, equity, social justice, and self-sufficiency through education, collaboration, and empowerment for immigrant and refugee communities, as well as communities of color.

Sophorn holds an MBA from Willamette University, Atkinson Graduate School of Management. She is a cohort member of Emerge Oregon Class of 2018 and in her free time serves as the Executive Director for the Golden Leaf Education Foundation, President of Building Power for Communities of Color, and Treasurer of Red Means Help.
