Salem, OR—Governor Kate Brown will address the media and take questions today at 11 AM on yesterday evening's announcement
that schools will be closed statewide between Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 31. The press conference will take place via teleconference.
Governor Brown will be joined on the call by Oregon Department of Education Director Colt Gill, Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero, Salem-Keizer Public Schools Superintendent Christy Perry, and Hillsboro School District Mike Scott.
“Schools are critical institutions that provide important services for all our students, and during this crisis I have worked hard to ensure those critical services continue. However, schools are experiencing critical shortages in staff, and superintendents are concerned for school personnel who are at elevated risk," said Governor Brown.
“Sending Oregon children home will not stop the spread of the coronavirus. This is a trying time for our community and I am reluctant to increase the burden on families who are already struggling to adapt to and stay healthy during this crisis. However, we are left with little choice in light of school districts’ staff capacity and operational concerns. I want to thank all of the teachers and school employees who have worked hard to keep our schools open until now.”
Members of the media are welcome to participate. Those who plan to attend or need additional information should contact Kate Kondayen at firstname.lastname@example.org
