The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and other local agencies are responding to a diesel release from a Kinder Morgan pipeline near the Bethany neighborhood in southwest Portland.

Kinder Morgan’s monitoring system indicated some abnormalities in the pipeline late yesterday and they shut the pipeline down before midnight. Kinder Morgan sent notification through the Oregon Emergency Response system that they had identified the leak at 4:15 a.m. this morning.

Currently the amount of diesel released is estimated to be between 1,100 and 3,000 gallons. The response team is working to excavate the contaminated soil and expose the pipeline so it can be repaired. The response team estimates that the pipeline will be repaired by midday Tuesday, March 17.

There are no perceived threats to surface water, no wildlife at risk and no cultural resources at risk. The response team has air monitors on-site and downwind at NW 124th Street. Air quality remains safe at both locations.

On-site workers are taking the appropriate precautions to manage their exposure to COVID-19.

More information about the release and cleanup will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
