Oregon FIRST Robotics Grant


FIRST is an international program with the stated mission to:

“…inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”

The Oregon FIRST Robotics Grant supports FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) programs through a competitive grant managed by the Oregon Department of Education. Grant applications are normally available in May for the following school year. The purpose of this grant is to:

  • Increase the number of students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related careers.
  • Elevate community involvement through mentorship and sponsorship of FIRST teams.
  • Increase the opportunities for Oregon students in 4th - 12th grades to participate in FIRST programs with a focus on underserved students and rural communities.

Applications now available through ORTOP

The Oregon Department of Education FIRST Robotics Grant program will continue to provide funding to support Oregon public schools' participation in FIRST programs. This year’s grant will be administered by the Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program (ORTOP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as the Oregon affiliate partner for FIRST.

The Oregon Legislature budgeted $466,650 to support FIRST programs in schools during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons. Team-based awards will provide support for FIRST LEGO League (Grades 4-8), FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 6-12), and FIRST Robotics Competition (Grades 9-12) teams. Applications for this grant, and thousands of dollars of team support from other sources, are available now and close

  • September 30 (FTC and FRC)
