In May 2022, Governor Brown directed the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) to develop a
statewide implementation plan for computer science education, which would provide access to comprehensive computer science education opportunities to every public school student in this state by the 2027-2028 school year. As part of this process, ODE and HECC are reaching out to partners and the community to conduct broad engagement and ensure this plan is developed with Oregon voices and addresses the current inequities that exist in Computer Science Education.
Alternate description: Phase I Engagement is 12/22 - 3/23. Consult Group meetings and initial implementation plan writing is 4/23 - 7/23. Phase II Engagement is 5/23 - 7/23. Draft Final Plan is 7/23 - 8/23 with publication 9/23.
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) are hosting three engagement sessions to share preliminary recommendations under consideration for inclusion in the Statewide Computer Science Implementation Plan. The purpose of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for feedback while the plan is in draft form, prior to its expected release in September 2023. Your voice is valued in helping to design Oregon’s Computer Science Implementation Plan!
The purpose of this engagement is to:
- Provide information about the
computer science directive.
- Share preliminary recommendations under consideration.
- Provide an opportunity for feedback while the plan is in draft form.
Please choose one of the following sessions that works best for you:
Sessions are expected to be 60-75 minutes. Please share this invitation widely with your communities. Students, families, educators, community members, industry professionals, and anyone with an interest in computer science education in Oregon are encouraged to attend!

This Computer Science Education Implementation Plan Phase I Engagement Report summarizes the community engagement efforts of the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) as directed by former Governor Kate Brown in the development of a statewide, long-term computer science education implementation plan. This report summarizes the participants’ voices from the engagement sessions and the online survey responses gathered between November 2022 and April 2023. All information included in this report is a reflection of the data gathered during the engagement sessions and is not intended as an endorsement by ODE or HECC. Translation coming soon.
To support the Computer Science implementation plan, ODE and HECC established a Computer Science Consult Group. The group is meeting regularly to advise ODE and HECC on initial drafts of the implementation plan.
We’d love to hear from you about how we can increase equitable access to Computer Science Education for all students! If you have any questions or comments, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
