Orientation Training for Foster Care

You must complete Orientation training to become a certified caregiver.

You can also participate in Orientation training to get an introduction and overview to help you determine if becoming a resource to children is right for you.

Training options

Orientation training is available with your local ODHS Child Welfare (CW) office or through self-guided, online sessions. 

With your local Child Welfare office

Attend Orientation training in-person or through a live video-stream presentation. 

  • This option is highly encouraged since it gives you the opportunity to meet a foster home certifier and other potential resource parents and ask questions in the moment. 
  • By attending Orientation with your local branch, you will learn about the required forms and assessment process and also get information about local processes and resources.

If you can't attend Orientation with a local office, complete the three-step Orientation process outlined below.

View the five-part online presentation in English or Español. All five videos take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to view.

Step 2 - Review additional materials

In addition to the online Orientation presentation, review the following video links and other materials. Become familiar with the bill of rights documents that impact children and young adults in foster care, certified resource parents and relative resource parents.

Step 3 - Orientation knowledge check

Complete the Orientation knowledge check and submit to your local Child Welfare office. This serves as your certificate of completion for orientation.
