How to get an Oregon driver’s license

Even if you do not have documentation, you can now get a driver’s license in Oregon. Starting Jan. 1, 2021, people in Oregon are no longer required to provide proof of legal presence or citizenship to get a driver’s license. You do not need a Social Security number or a United States birth certificate.

A driver’s license should not be confused with the Real ID. If you have a driver’s license, you can use it to legally drive or as personal identification. It cannot be used for federal identification purposes. This means that starting Oct. 1, 2021, you will not be able to use an Oregon driver's license to get on an airplane or to enter a secure federal building or military base.

​A “Real ID" is a driver's license that can be used for air travel and access to federal buildings and other restricted areas. To get a Real ID in Oregon, people must provide proof of lawful status and submit additional identification documents. These documents may include a passport or original certified birth certificate, proof of a Social Security number and certain types of photo ID. Starting Oct. 1, 2021, you will need a Real ID to board a flight or enter a secure federal building or military base.
