Motivational Interviewing Trainings for Diabetes Management

2022-23 virtual training details (no-cost CME)

Oregon Medicaid providers are invited to no-cost trainings on motivational interviewing for diabetes management. The trainings will focus on improving providers' confidence and skills in conversations about sensitive behavior change topics required for diabetes management. Three types of trainings are available: level 1, level 2 and group settings.

Motivational interviewing for diabetes management - Level 1 trainings

Who: Oregon health care providers who provide diabetes management care or support to Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members, particularly primary care, behavioral health and oral health providers. Other clinic staff (care coordinators, traditional health workers, etc.) who interact with patients with diabetes are also invited to attend. Level 1 trainings are for providers either new to motivational interviewing or who haven't recently attended a training in it.

What: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, will lead full-day virtual trainings focused on motivational interviewing for diabetes management. The session will focus on increasing your confidence and skills to facilitate conversations with patients about diabetes management. See draft agenda. At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit and key principles of motivational interviewing 
  • Use open-ended questions to understand the patient’s concerns, needs and desires related to their diabetes management
  • Name three resistance-producing clinician behaviors
  • Frame diabetes management advice using terminology that is more receptive to patients

Motivational interviewing for diabetes management - Level 2 trainings

Who: Oregon health care providers who provide diabetes management care or support to Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members, particularly primary care, behavioral health and oral health providers. Other clinic staff (care coordinators, traditional health workers, etc.) who interact with patients with diabetes are also invited to attend. Participants should have at least one day of prior training in motivational interviewing or patient-centered counseling and a minimum of six months of use. Attending a Level 1 training or prior patient-centered counseling training hosted by the Transformation Center would count for this requirement.

What: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, will lead full-day virtual trainings focused on motivational interviewing for diabetes management. The session will build on prior training in motivational interviewing to improve health care providers' confidence and skills in their conversations about behavior change and supporting patients' health goals, with a focus on diabetes management. See draft agenda. At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit and key principles of motivational interviewing 
  • Ask for, reflect and summarize change talk to strengthen motivation to change
  • Use options tool/circle chart to facilitate conversations with patients with diabetes
  • Engage with patients using the four processes of motivational interviewing

Using motivational interviewing in diabetes management groups

Who: Oregon health care providers (particularly primary care, behavioral health and oral health) who facilitate diabetes management group programs for Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members. Providers facilitating diabetes management groups for Tribal clinics are also invited to attend. People attending this training should have a minimum of one day of training in motivational interviewing or patient-centered counseling. Attending a Level 1 training or prior patient-centered counseling training hosted by the Transformation Center would count for this requirement.

What: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, will lead half-day virtual trainings focused on using motivational interviewing in diabetes management group settings. The session will build on prior training in motivational interviewing to improve health care providers' confidence and skills in their conversations about diabetes management in group settings. See draft agenda. At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Use OARS (listening skills) to facilitate group conversations
  • Apply the four processes of motivational interviewing in groups
