CCO incentive metrics
Dr. Backus practices medicine in Bend, Oregon and finds great satisfaction in providing thorough, comprehensive medical care.
In 2014 he won one of the Million Hearts national awards for excellence in blood pressure control, the only one in Oregon at that time. Since then he has obtained a grant for educating primary care providers about hypertension in Central Oregon in an attempt to improve population control.
Dr. Backus grew up in Seattle, Washington and attended Nathan Hale High School, where he was valedictorian and student body president. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Stanford University, graduating with honors in 1989. He completed medical school at Duke University, where he published a peer-reviewed basic science paper, and won an AOA (medical honor society) presentation award. He completed residency at the University of Washington in 1996 and moved to Bend in 2000. In 2006 he founded Cascade Internal Medicine Specialists, LLC. In 2008, he was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
He immensely enjoys his three children. During his free time, he enjoys fly-fishing, mountain and cyclocross biking, skate and downhill skiing, soccer, and playing violin.
