OSH embraces trauma-informed care

Monday, January 7, 2019

No one is immune to the impacts of trauma. Whether it’s physical, psychological or emotional, trauma has lasting, adverse effects on a person’s functioning and well-being.

That’s why Oregon State Hospital established a multidisciplinary Trauma-Informed Care Committee. This group is focused on helping people recover from traumatic events. Trauma-informed care includes:
• Understanding, recognizing and responding to the effects of trauma;
• Emphasizing safety – for both patients and staff – to help trauma survivors rebuild a sense of control and empowerment;
• Developing new, trauma-related hospital policies, practices and trainings; and
• Teaching staff how to practice self-care.

To learn more about this committee and its mission, please see the Trauma-Informed Care article in the Recovery Times staff newsletter.
