Depression: Resources through Moda Health

What to know:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified Depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide.
  • Depression is an illness, like diabetes or asthma. It is not a personal failure.
  • Like other illnesses, depression tends to run in families.
  • People with a chronic medical illness like diabetes, chronic pain or heart disease are at higher risk for depression.
  • Signs of clinical depression include persistent sad or “down” mood, sleep problems, low energy, inability to enjoy things, thoughts of death or suicide, feeling hopeless, and appetite changes.
  • Depression is highly treatable. Evidence-based treatments include:
    • Talk therapy
    • Medication
    • Somatic therapies such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
What to do:

  • Effective self-care is an important component in recovering from or preventing depression. Some proven strategies include:
    • Engage in physical exercise;
    • Stay connected to people you find supportive;
    • Practice self-forgiveness and acceptance;
    • Engage in pleasurable activities;
    • Avoid alcohol and other non-prescribed substances;
    • Find ways to contribute to others or engage in meaningful work.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you think you may have depression; sometimes self-care isn’t enough and treatment can make the difference.
