Seeking Proctors for the Hearing Aid Specialist Practical Examination

Wednesday, March 9, 2022

The Advisory Council on Hearing Aids is seeking licensed hearing aid specialists to serve as proctors during the administration of the Hearing Aid Specialist Practical Examination. The pool of proctors is at an all-time low and the Health Licensing Office (HLO) is in dire need of individuals who are willing to “give back" to their profession by serving as a proctor.

Proctoring the Hearing Aid Specialist Practical Examination entails observing examination candidates performing audiometric testing and masking, ear-mold impressions, and hearing aid fitting and selection. Proctors grade candidates by using standardized forms and scoring criteria.

The HLO will provide necessary training and information pertaining to the practical examination process, including the steps the candidate must take, scoring forms, and the criteria candidates and proctors must follow. The training will be held, by appointment only, at the HLO located at 1430 Tandem Ave. NE, Suite 180, Salem, Oregon 97301. In addition, proctors are paid a stipend (proctoring fee) to serve as a proctor.

The Hearing Aid Specialist Practical Examination is administered during a quarterly pre-set schedule and generally administered on Monday's between 9am and 3pm. However, on occasion, the examination may start earlier or end later dependent on the number of examination candidates qualified to sit for the examination. The specific times for administration of the examination are determined 30 days prior to the scheduled examination dates.

Proctors must hold an active hearing aid specialist license issued by the HLO and maintained for the last two years and are in good standing with the HLO, with no current of pending disciplinary action.
