In our efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 at Oregon State Hospital, we are taking additional steps to keep patients safe this holiday season. This includes our process for gift giving — whether gifts are given in person, dropped off at Reception, or mailed.
The gifts must be unwrapped.
Because of staffing shortages, we are unable to wrap gifts this year. We're asking families and friends of patients to include paper gift bags (without handles or staples) and tissue paper.
We will provide a limited number of gift bags and tissue paper for people who need it.
See below for additional details on gift giving this year. For other questions or concerns — including questions about the items allowed on each unit — please contact OSH Family Services at 503-947-8109 in Salem or 541-465-2785 in Junction City. The patient property access list is available here. You can also email OSH.FamilyServices@dhsoha.state.or.us.
To allow time for gift screening, plan to arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled visitation begins.
Reception/Security staff will:
Inventory the gift
Verify with unit staff that the gift is approved for the patient to receive
Place the gift in tissue paper or a gift bag, if provided
Scan/X-ray the gift for contraband
Secure the gift in a mesh bag for delivery
You will receive the gift to present to your loved one during the visit.
At the end of the visit, unit staff will bring the patient — and the gift — back to the unit, where they'll record it on inventory documents.
Please know that giving gifts in person is only allowed on Dec. 24 and 25. On all other days, gifts will go in a 24-hour hold before they're delivered to patients.
You can find more information about visitation rules, and the schedule, on the Visitation FAQ on the OSH website.
You may drop off the gifts at Reception during regular business hours.
Reception staff will provide you with a receipt.
When entering the building, you must wear a mask and wash your hands at the hand-washing station.
We must receive all gifts at the Salem and Junction City campuses by Dec. 22 so we can deliver them to patients between Dec. 24 and 25.
We will hold all gifts for at least 24 hours before we deliver them to patients.
If you drop off your gifts Dec. 22 or later, staff may deliver them after Dec. 25 and after the 24-hour hold.
Your gifts will remain in a 24-hour hold (from when it arrives at the hospital) before staff will deliver them to your loved one.
If your gifts are received after Dec. 22, staff may deliver them after Dec. 25 and after the 24-hour hold.
Thank you for your patience as we all do our part to keep our patients, staff and visitors healthy and safe.
