COVID-19 Training for Vaccine Providers

New bivalent COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for COVID-19 vaccine recipients ages 6 Months and older. Brands cannot be mixed and matched.

Pfizer

Pfizer Bivalent Vaccine for ages 6 months through 4 years (Bivalent Maroon Cap) is authorized as the dose 3 of the 3-dose primary series. For doses 1 and 2, monovalent Maroon Cap Pfizer remains authorized. Bivalent Maroon cap cannot be given for doses 1 and 2 and monovalent Maroon Cap is no longer authorized for the 3rd dose of the primary series.
Booster doses are not authorized for Pfizer recipients ages 6 months through 4 years. Pfizer recipients ages 6 mo through 4yr who received a full 3-dose series of monovalent vaccine are not authorized to receive the bivalent dose or any other booster.
All scheduled Pfizer 3rd dose appointments for recipients ages 6 months through 4 years should be rescheduled until you have bivalent 3rd dose in stock.
The dosing schedule is not changed. (3-8 weeks between monovalent dose 1 and monovalent dose 2, then at least 8 weeks between monovalent dose 2 and bivalent dose 3)
Storage and handling of bivalent Maroon Cap is the same as for other Pfizer products.

Moderna

Moderna bivalent booster for ages 6 months through 5 years is a 0.2mL dose. Moderna’s primary series monovalent vaccine for this age group is a 0.25mL dose.
For Moderna, the original, monovalent vaccine for ages 6 months through 5 years is still the appropriate vaccine for primary series doses (including any additional doses for moderately or severely immunocompromised individuals).
Bivalent boosters should follow the primary series by 2 months.
Post-puncture time for the Moderna bivalent booster for ages 6 months through 5 years is only 8 hours. Otherwise, storage and handling is the same as other Moderna products.

The Super User role keeps vaccine shipping information current, can submit immunization reports through file transfer, and can create new ALERT IIS user access.
