Government Island State Recreation Area is located on the Columbia River northeast of Portland and is accessible only by boat. The island has approximately 15 miles of shoreline, offers free primitive camping and is popular with anglers and boaters cruising the Columbia River.
In November 2008, OPRD began construction of a new recreational dock and composting restroom facility at Sandy Beach located on the north side of the island.  The new 10-foot-wide docks are constructed of concrete and provide just under a half mile of tie-up space for boaters, including ADA accessible moorage areas.
Two 120-foot aluminum gangways provide access to the island. Once on shore, a short trail leads to a self-contained ADA accessible composting restroom. The environmentally friendly restroom incorporates photovoltaic panels to produce the electricity required to operate lights, fans and control panels. Rain water is collected in two 125-gallon tanks and is used to assist the composting process and for spray cleaning the restroom.
This new facility opened to the public in April 2009 and has already proven to be an extremely popular destination for boaters.
