Oregon Parks and Recreation Department accepting comments on draft master plan for state parks in Wallowa County

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is accepting public comments on the updated draft master plan for state park properties in Wallowa County. The comment period is open through Oct. 20, 2018.


The parks addressed in the plan: Minam State Recreation Area near Elgin, Wallowa Lake State Park near Joseph, and Wallowa Lake Highway Forest Scenic Corridor near Wallowa.


The draft master plan is available online: wallowastateparksplan.com.


Members of the public have several opportunities for comment:

  • Online: submit comments on wallowastateparksplan.com.
  • Mail: submit comments to Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Attn. Ian Matthews, 725 Summer St. NE, Suite C, Salem, OR 97301.
  • In-person: two meetings will be held about the plan. The first will be 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Cook Memorial Library, 2006 Fourth St., La Grande. The second will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Joseph Community Center, 401 E. 1st St., Joseph. Public comments will be accepted at both meetings.


The public may also attend the upcoming Wallowa Master Plan Advisory Committee meeting 2-4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Joseph Community Center, 401 E. 1st St., Joseph. Public comments will not be accepted at this meeting, however it will give interested parties an opportunity to learn more about the draft plan.


A park master plan guides the development and use of park facilities. It also provides guidelines for the protection and management of important natural, cultural and scenic resources within the park. Master plans are on a 20-year update cycle; the Wallowa County state parks master plan was created in 2001.
