Corbett OR - The Portland Women's Forum and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department invite the public to attend a rededication of the memorial to the conservationist and civic leader Gertrude Glutsch Jensen on May 2. Several officers of the Portland Women's Forum as well as the Portland/Metro district manager for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will speak at the event, which begins at 10 a.m.
The stone-and-mortar memorial is located at Chanticleer Point at the Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint on the Historic Columbia River Highway about two miles east of Corbett. It was first installed 43 years ago, in May of 1970. The memorial will be rededicated just fifteen days before what would have been Jensen's 110th birthday.
Jensen was nicknamed the "Angel of the Gorge" for her tireless advocacy on behalf of the scenic area to protect it from commercial development. She was the first chairwoman of the Oregon Columbia River Gorge Commission and the Portland Women's Forum's Woman of the Year in both 1963 and 1964. Jensen is also commemorated with three benches in the lobby of the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center in Stevenson, Washington. She passed away in 1986.
Active since 1946, the Portland Women's Forum is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and beautification of the Columbia River Gorge. The original 3.71-acre tract for the scenic viewpoint was purchased by the Portland Women's Forum in 1956 using proceeds from fundraisers; it was donated to the state of Oregon in 1962. Its defining feature is its view of Vista House at Crown Point and the Columbia River Gorge. More than 265,000 people visit the viewpoint each year.
