Lost In The Line of Duty
Amos B. "Spud" Helms, a former semi-pro baseball player and one-time member of state traffic police was shot in the abdomen as he and captain Lee Noe approached a suspect vehicle at a service station in LaGrande.  Helms died 73 days later from his wound. The car matched the description of the vehicle used in a hold-up in Idaho Falls.  Captain Noe fired at the suspects who were later captured, convicted and sentenced to life in imprisonment without possibility of parole for the murder of Helms.  One was granted a conditional pardon in 1942, and the other was paroled in 1950.
