Lost In The Line of Duty
Holly V. Holcomb of Salem, appointed Jan 1st, 1939.  On November 25, 1975 in front of the Public Service Building in Salem, Superintendent Holcomb was shot after having a confrontation with a former member, Robert H. Wampler.  The accused was taken into custody, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment.  He was paroled less than ten years after the incident, in 1984.
The department of State Police established the Holly V. Holcomb Award in 1988. This award is presented to officers who, while serving in an official capacity, distinguish themselves by reacting to a situation in a heroic or positive and professional manner to reduce the risk of loss of life or injury to another person.
