Challenge
Regain historic fish passage access to 125 miles of river habitat associated with the lower Crooked River below Bowman and Ochoco dams and maintain a renewable hydroelectric power resource for the community.
Project Overview
This project is an unprecedented collaborative effort between federal, state, tribal, utilities, and non-governmental agencies to provide a ladder for fish to migrate to historic habitat in the upper Deschutes River sub-basin. The ladder also allows bull trout and other native fish to pass through the dam to spawn, rear and forage. The project's success was demonstrated shortly after the ladder was complete–the very first recorded steelhead used the new ladder to volitionally enter the Crooked River for the first time in over 50 years.
