Oregon Summer EBT

Oregon Department of Education Summer EBT is a new grocery benefits program to help families buy food for their school-aged children during the summer when school is out.

  • Families will get $120 for each eligible child. A one-time payment will be issued each summer.
  • Already have SNAP, TANF or OHP? You don’t need to apply. Summer EBT will be automatically added to your EBT card.

Your school-aged child is eligible for Summer EBT if:

  • Your household already receives SNAP, TANF or the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid), OR
  • Your child attends a school with the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or School Breakfast Program (SBP), and your household income meets the requirements for free or reduced-price school meals, OR
  • Your child attends a school with the NSLP or SBP and your child is:
    • Enrolled in migrant programs
    • Experiencing houselessness
    • Participating in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
    • ​Attending Head Start​

If your household receives SNAP, TANF or the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) this school year (2023-2024), your child will be signed up for the Summer EBT program automatically.

If you believe y​our child is eligible for Summer EBT but was not signed up automatically, you can still apply. The simple application will be available starting this summer. The application will need your household income and your child’s name, school, date of birth and address.​ ​

Some children are signed up automatically for Summer EBT if their household participates in SNAP, TANF or the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid). Others can apply online, by email or using a paper application.

​If you believe your child is eligible for Summer EBT but was​ not signed up automatically, you can still apply. The simple application will be available starting this summer. The application will need your household income and your child’s name, school, date of birth and address.

Summer EBT will be put on an Oregon EBT card (Oregon Trail Card). You can use the card to buy food at grocery stores, farmers markets and other places that accept EBT cards.​​​​

If your household is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Summer EBT will be added to your current Oregon EBT card. If more than one eligible child lives in your household, benefits for all children will be put onto the same card.​​​​

​For eligible children who do not receive SNAP or TANF benefits, Summer EBT will be added to a new Oregon EBT card. The new card will be mailed to your latest address on file. All benefits for children who live in the same household will be put on one Oregon EBT card whenever possible.​​​​

Summer EBT does not affect you or your child’s immigration status. The public charge rule does not apply to Summer EBT benefits.

Also, the Summer EBT program does not ask for immigration status and does not use i​mmigration status to determine eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Eligibility for Summer EBT

​​Yes. Your child is el​igible if they are an Oregon Health Plan member or get more than $0 in SNAP or TANF benefits for at least one month between Sep. 1, 2023, through Aug. 31, 2024.

Wait for a notice to tell you if your child is signed up for Summer EBT benefits. This notice will be sent this summer. This notice will be mailed to the household​ address we have on file or sent to your email address. If you listed email as the best way to contact you, the notice will be emailed.

If you do not get a notice, you will need to apply for Summer EBT. The simple application will be available starting this summer. The application will need your household income and your child’s name, school, date of birth and address.​

​​​​​​Students who get free meals at school because they go to a Community Eligible Provision (CEP) school​ are not automatically signed up for Summer EBT benefits. You will need to fill out a simple application this summer. The application will need your household income and your child’s name, school, date of birth and address.​

Getting Summer EBT benefits

​​Benefits will be issued in summer 2024. You will get all your Summer EBT benefits in one payment. You will get a letter addressed to your eligible child by mail or email. If you listed email as the best way to contact you, the letter will be emailed. The benefits will be put on your household’s existing Oregon EBT card.

What to do with unused Pandemic EBT food benefits

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT)​ is a different program that ended with the COVID-19 emergency. P-EBT benefits received in 2023 expire after nine months if you have not used your card. If you have started using your card and continue to use it, the benefits will not expire.
