About the program

The original Gatekeeper program was developed by the Spokane Mental Health Elder Services Program in Washington State. Since then, it has been adapted and used around the world.

The program provides free training to people who come in to contact with at-risk older adults and people with disabilities through their everyday work, such as postal workers, meter readers, financial institutions, emergency responders, social service agencies and others. The training covers how to recognize warning signs and make referrals to the ADRC.

ADRC staff arrange for follow-up calls, visits or appropriate referrals to check on the person and provide the support they need.
