Abstract:
Scientific findings of the last several years have shown that the Oregon coast is vulnerable to great (M 8-9) earthquakes that can occur on the offshore cascadia subduction zone fault system. Tsunamis are caused by any large-scale disturbance of the sea floor. These disturbances are generally caused by faulting, landslides, or volcanic eruptions. This project addresses the simultaneous uplift and subsidence of the sea floor accompanying undersea earthquakes on large fault zones termed "subduction zones". The shape of the deformed sea floor after an earthquake is transmitted to the overlying sea surface, forming the initial tsunami wave. A series of 56 maps delineating the tsunami inundation boundary were produced to implement Senate Bill 379 passed by the 1995 Oregon Legislature and enacted into law as Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) 455.446 and 455.447. These ORS limit construction of new essential facilities and special occupancy structures in tsunami flooding zones. This digital representation of the original series of maps combines all map information into one file. The original hardcopy maps remain the basis for implementing ORS 455.446 and 455.447.
Purpose:
The focus of this digital representation of the original hardcopy maps is to combine the 56 maps into one vector file and enable wider distribution of the tsunami inundation boundary. Also on this compact disc are map viewing files of the original 56 tsunami maps.

This digital tsunami inundation line is a combination of the original 56 quadrangle-based lines released as separate open file reports. This line has gaps at various points where the tsunami inundation hazard was judged to have such low risk that specifying an inundation zone for the purposes of the legislation was unnecessary. Tsunami effects in these areas, if any, would likely be channel bank splash and higher than normal currents for the waterways involved. The purpose of Senate Bill 379 was not to map all possible tsunami inundation, but to show areas, especially dry land areas, that have a reasonable risk of tsunami damage to critical and essential facilities.

This figure is the map accuracy standard for the U.S. Geological Survey 7½' topographic map series, which was the base map used for plotting the tsunami inundation boundary. 2.4.2.2.1 Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: The maximum vertical positional error is one contour interval on the corresponding U.S. Geological Survey 7½' quadrangle base map. 2.4.2.2.2 Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation: This figure varies depending on contour interval for the respective U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle. Contour intervals of the corresponding USGS base maps range from 20 to 50 feet.

Process_Description:
The original hardcopy maps delineating the tsunami inundation hazard for the Oregon coast were drafted on stable base mylar film in 1995. In 1999 the mylars were digitized by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. The digital linework was then formatted with U.S. Geological Survey digital raster graphic files. In 2000, the digital linework was edgematched for the entire coast and combined into a single data file. This digital file is made available to meet the needs of geographic information system users, however, the original 56 hardcopy maps remain the implementation of ORS 455.446 and 455.447.
