About Santiam Correctional Institution
The building that is now Santiam Correctional Institution was constructed in 1946 and used as an annex to the Oregon State Hospital for mental health patients. In 1960 the building was acquired by Fairview Home and given the name Frederic Prigg Cottage.

In 1977 Prigg Cottage opened as a minimum custody pre-release center to ease overcrowded conditions at Oregon State Penitentiary, Oregon State Correctional Institution and Oregon Women's Correctional Center. During the 1980's, Prigg Cottage evolved into CDRC (Corrections Division Release Center), DCRC (Department of Corrections Release Center), and finally, in 1990 became Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI). For efficiency SCI and MCCF were administratively joined in 1992 under the management of one superintendent.

The institution places inmates in a full range of jobs and programs. Many of the labor-type jobs are in the form of crews contracting with state agencies, local organizations and private industry within a 60-mile radius of Salem, Oregon. A variety of cognitive, substance abuse, transition and education programs are available to inmates housed at SCI.

The prison complex sits on a 12-acre parcel with nine acres inside the perimeter fence.

Visiting Information

VISITING
Monday and Friday Evenings: 6:00 to 8:30 PM.
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays are 12:45 – 3:15 PM, and 6:00 PM  – 8:30 PM.

Holidays that fall on Fridays and Mondays, follow the Holiday schedule.

All General Population inmates housed at SCI and who are eligible for privileged visiting will be allowed to have visits during any of the six regularly scheduled visiting sessions. Regular visiting sessions are offered on Monday and Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays in afternoon and evening sessions. Visitors may not visit twice in one visiting session.

On weekends, visitors may visit during either the afternoon or evening sessions, NOT BOTH. Visitor processing will end 30 minutes prior to each visiting session has concluded; i.e. Friday evening visitor processing will end at 8:00 pm. Visitors should be aware that due to space limitations, only three persons are allowed to visit at one time.  One child under 3 years old may sit on another visitor’s lap.  Also, space limitations may require that visiting sessions be terminated early so that others may visit. If this is necessary, the following factors will be considered: distance visitors travel, frequency of visits, and time of arrival.

Basic Visits

Effective December 16th, inmates and visitors who are on basic visiting status will no longer be using the basic visiting room.  Instead, we will have two dedicated tables in the main visiting room area with a small divider placed on the table. This divider will be used to maintain our basic visiting rule of no physical contact.

Although all basic visits will occur during our normal institution visiting hours, visitors will still be required to contact Ms. M. Gardner, basic visiting coordinator, to schedule basic visits. Visits will continue to be one (1) hour in length.

Our goal is to provide visitors and inmates with a more personalized visit that will encourage positive relationships. Please follow visiting staffs’ directives when this change is implemented. See section 291-127-0210 in the visiting rule below.
