WELCOME to the Oregon Employment Department (OED). The information provided here is so that you will know what to expect on your first day, and to help make your first days go smoothly. Starting a new job always comes with a bit of anxiety. It’s also an opportunity to learn and ask lots of questions. We want you to know we are glad you are here and are committed to your success.

Before you start work at OED there are a few things you can do to make your first day run smoothly.

Accept the Offer
  • Your new manager will send you an official position offer letter for you to sign and return. This letter, when signed by you and received by our Office of Human Resources starts the internal processes required to create your employee accounts, system access credentials and more.  
  • If you accepted your position verbally and have not received the offer letter, please contact the hiring manager or our Office of Human Resources to get the ball rolling.
Required Forms-

There are some forms that you must complete and submit on your first day. To make this process go smoothly you can download these forms and complete them ahead of time to bring with you on your first day. Below is a list of the forms and you can click here​ to download them all.
  • The W-4 form is where you indicate the number of allowances you will claim so we know how much to withhold from your paycheck for federal taxes. There are instructions on the form and a worksheet to help you determine how many allowances to take.
  • Emergency Contact Form​ – You need to let us know who we should contact on your behalf in the case of an emergency. This person should be able to make medical decisions for you and be at least 18 years old.
  • The Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9​ is a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services form. It is used by an employer to verify an employee's identity and to establish that the worker is eligible to accept employment in the United States. This form will be completed by you and your hiring manager on your first day. You must bring appropriate identification with you for you manager to complete the form. Acceptable forms of identification are listed on the form
  • Direct Deposit – complete and submit this form if you would like your paycheck to be electronically deposited into your bank account. Note: direct deposit could take up to a month to setup, take precautions if you have auto payments set up for your bills.
  • Self ID​ – This form is for you to self-identify your race and ethnicity. It is optional to self-identify but the form must be submitted whether you answer or not.
  • Commitment to Confidentiality- Confidentiality is an important aspect of our jobs at OED. This form is an initial agreement that you understand the responsibilities and consequences of maintaining the confidentiality of our systems and customers. Additional training is also required that you can access after signing this form on your first day.

You will be met by your manager or a designated person on your first day. Your manager will call you prior to your first day to confirm your start time, who you will be meeting with and where. It is likely that you will have your picture taken for the internal employee directory and badge (as applicable), so be photo ready. Remember to bring your completed forms and appropriate identification for the I-9 form.

A lot of your first day will be familiarizing yourself to your new surroundings, co-workers and colleagues.
Here are some tips to make your fist day the best it can be:
  • Be on time
  • Ask questions
  • Smile
Don’t worry about remembering names – you will meet multiple people the first days and weeks, so unless you have an eidetic memory you won’t remember all of them.
