Where EVERYDAY is Veterans Day!
Memorial Day
May 24, 2010

"It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle."
                --Gen. (ret.) Norman Schwarzkopf

A list of Memorial Day events in Oregon will be posted before May 1, 2010.

National Moment of Remembrance

Each year at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Americans unite in a National Moment of Remembrance which honors America’s fallen and their families. During this time, 200 Amtrak trains blast their whistles, approximately 500,000 Major League Baseball fans are joined in silence, and countless other participants make a vow to remember.

This Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs will officially begin a countdown on December 7th--the anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. This day will mark 161 days until the National Moment of Remembrance.

National Memorial Day Concert broadcast
On Memorial Day weekend, PBS will unite the nation with an evening that has become an American tradition.  The multi award-winning National Memorial Day concert will be broadcast In Washingto DC near the steps of the U.S. Capitol. The annual event honors the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families, and all those who have given their lives while serving our country.

Encouraging Veterans to Share Their War Experiences
There is much to learn from our nation’s veterans; however, for some, it can be painful to revisit the memories and difficult to talk about the experiences of war.  Families and friends are often very curious about those times. Yet, because the veteran may not discuss these memories, family members feel they shouldn't either.

Each veteran’s experience with war is an important part of history that should be passed on to future generations.  And, though difficult, sharing these stories can have a powerful healing effect both for veterans and their families.  The form below provides an opportunity for you to write about your experiences.  Sometimes sharing your story the first time is the most difficult part of all.
