"We have gone a long way to show that women in the military, serving shoulder to shoulder with men, are not a social experiment. It's an example of professionals doing what they were trained to do. We have a shared passion for the mission because (the military) is a profession, not a job."
- Brig. Gen. Dana Born, USAF
"We're all part of something bigger than ourselves."
Women have served valiantly in America’s wars and conflicts throughout history. And although women were not formally under military command until the early part of the 20th century, they have served in various capacities, beginning with America’s War of Independence. The study of women veterans begins with the history of women in the military and their changing roles in the military.
