Be A Volunteer At The State Library!
Volunteer Program Mission
Citizens who volunteer are valuable assets to the Oregon State Library. The Library Board of Trustees and the State Librarian promote and encourage the involvement of volunteers to assist staff in the achievement of the mission and the goals of the State Library.

Who Can Volunteer?

If you want to share your skills or learn new ones, work on an issue that is important to you, or contribute to your fellow citizens of Oregon you may volunteer.

Church, community, service, support, and youth groups can work together to assist on current programs or special projects when the work is available.

The State Library is an active supporter of School to Work, career related learning. Students are welcome to explore through mentorships, site visits, informational interviews, job shadows, structured work experience, and internships.

Opportunities Available

Information Technology (IT) Assets Inventory Volunteer

Time commitment: 4 hours once a week for approximately 6 months
Location: Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St NE, Salem, OR 97301
  • Gain practical experience in an active IT department.
  • Move, organize, and document unused computer hardware to be considered surplus.
  • Organize and document software licensing information.
  • Perform a detailed agency-wide hardware and software inventory.
  • Enter licensing and inventory information into a database.
  • Desired skills and qualifications: entry-level knowledge of computer software and hardware, good organizational and communication skills, able to lift equipment weighing around 40 pounds.

Genealogy Information Volunteer

Time commitment: 4 hours once per week on Fridays 1:00-5:00, on-going
Location: Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301

  • Assist library patrons with researching their family history.
  • Use reference materials, databases, books, online catalogs, CD's and microfilm.
  • Greet patrons at the reference desk.
  • Qualifications: good communication skills by phone, email and in person; some knowledge and experience in Genealogy research.

Next Steps
An appointment will be arranged for you to meet with the Volunteeer Program Coordinator, along with a tour of the work area. The interview assures a successful match for both you and the agency.

Your skills, interests, and goals will be matched with a task placement.

This includes review of the state and agency policies and procedures, agency and program missions, and volunteer program policy.

Training will be provided for all volunteer tasks .

Internship Program
The Internship Program is designed to give students real work experience performing a project or task that the State Library identifies as necessary to achieve the mission and goals of the agency.
