Oregon Youth Conservation Corps
History of Oregon Youth Conservation Corps

The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps (OYCC) Summer Conservation Corps (SCC) was established by the Oregon Legislature in 1987, to provide a program to increase educational, training and employment opportunities for youth; to improve work skills, instill a strong work ethic and increase their employability; and to increase social skills such as tolerance of diversity, team work, social responsibility, appreciation of the environment and personal development such as improved self-esteem

The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps builds on the strong connections between positive work experiences, work skills, personal responsibility,  commitment to education and future employment for youth.

OYCC was established by the Oregon Legislature to:
  • protect, conserve, rehabilitate and improve the natural, historical and cultural resources of Oregon; and
  • to increase educational, training and employment opportunities for youth, for the purpose of improving work skills, instilling work ethic and increasing employability.
OYCC IMPROVES OREGON’S ENVIRONMENT, ITS PEOPLE AND ADDRESSES OREGON’S BENCHMARKS

Youth corps members work on projects such as:
  • Construction of trails, boat docks, disability access ramps, fences and picnic tables
  • Restoration/Preservation of wetlands, stream banks, endangered species and other wildlife habitat, and historical and cultural sites
  • Maintaining all of the above after wind, floods, fire or normal use
  • Plus plantings, water quality testing, removing non-native plants and weeds, watershed work, managing nurseries, landscaping, mapping, surveying and recycling and community stewardship projects
OYCC has a nine-member Advisory Committee, three members appointed by the Governor, three appointed by the Senate President and three appointed by the House Speaker.

BLM / OYCC Employment and Education Program

The BLM/OYCC Employment and Education Project is a Cooperative Agreement between OYCC/CCWD and the BLM. This agreement allows BLM Districts to run individual grants/projects through OYCC under one agreement rather than multiple individual contracts or grants.  OYCC will post opportunities on this website as they are developed by the BLM.  Interested youth corps providers are encouraged to apply for grant funds to complete the posted projects.  The BLM will make the final selection of who is awarded a grant.
