Veterans Day Events Listed, Names of Oregon's Fallen to be Added to Memorial
Press Release
Nov. 2, 2010
SALEM – Oregon communities, towns and cities are planning special events, parades or other gatherings to honor military veterans on Veterans Day, November 11.  The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs (ODVA) has compiled a statewide list of the events of which the agency is aware and that are scheduled on or near Veterans Day.
In Salem, a public ceremony will be held at the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial at 3 p.m., to pay tribute to all of Oregon's fallen service members who have served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
The ceremony will also commemorate all Oregon service members who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the four since Memorial Day.
Their names have been inscribed on the memorial's Wall of Honor, located on the grounds of the Oregon Veterans' Building at 700 Summer St. N.E.
The fallen include:  Chaplain Capt. Dale A. Goetz, U.S. Army; Sgt. Ian M. Tawney and Lance Cpl. Joseph E. Rodewald, U.S. Marine Corps; and Pfc. Anthony T. Justesen, U.S. Army.
ODVA Deputy Director Paula Brown will conduct the unveiling of the newly-added names.  The ceremony is also dedicated to the families and survivors of those fallen servicemembers.
Dedicated in November 2006, the memorial's fountain surrounds an American serviceman who is reaching out to a global map inside the pool.  This represents the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve members who have voluntarily stepped forward to serve and protect their nation.
See the events list online.  For more information call ODVA at 1-800-828-8801, ext. 2390.
