Ore. Women Veterans Conference March 26-27
Press Release
March 15, 2010
SALEM - The Oregon Women Veterans Conference will be held Friday, March 26 through Saturday, March 27, at Seven Feathers Resort and Casino in Canyonville.
The two-day event will include several educational workshops on issues that are important to women veterans. There will also be guest speakers, entertainment, and camaraderie with more than 400 fellow women veterans in attendance.
Conference coordinator and Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs Administrator Val Conley said the event is an opportunity for women veterans to come together in one place to network and to connect with other military servicewomen.
It has been unsettling for Conley to hear a woman who has served two, four, six or more years in the military ask if they are a veteran.
"Many women are of the mindset that if you did not serve in a theater of operations then you are not a veteran. It does not matter where or when you served. All that matters is that you made the commitment to serve and that your service was faithful and honorable," Conley said.
"Women veterans are the silent veterans, our voices have not been heard because our numbers have been small, but that is beginning to change as we grow and find our voices."
The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Registration is free and begins each day at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Advanced registration is required and space is limited.
Women veterans interested in attending should call Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs at 1-800-692-9666, ext. 2090 or 2264, or download a registration form at www.oregon.gov/odva.wvc.shtml.
Conference attendees can reserve a room at Seven Feathers, 1-800-548-8461. The casino is located 25 miles south of Roseburg, off of I-5 at exit 98 or 99.
