Spanish-American War Plaque (#5)
This plaque is placed along the walkway near the World War I memorial. It honors the more than 1,300 Oregon veterans who participated in that war.
Most of the volunteers were part of the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment; one of the first military units to be sent to the war zone in Manila, Philippines.
Former Salem Statesman Journal reporter, Alfred Jones, discovered the commemorative plaque while searching through the historical properties in the basement of the Capitol Building.
The Secretary of State’s office deemed it appropriate to be placed on ODVA’s grounds.
The Spanish American War began in February 1898 and ended in 1899.
